The skyline of the Philippine capital, Manila is changing along with its view from above . Mega projects are expanding the urban landscape and adding spaces with massive transformation projects in progress. They aim to push back the sea and create new opportunities.
As Manila Bay, the center of the projects, the total area of land reclamation projects, whether completed or in progress, is about 187. These are ongoing and approved reclamation across the country. According to an estimation, these projects are valued at more than 23 trillion pesos ($397 billion), Marina Bay has a considerable contribution. The idea of reclamation started way back in the early 1960s and has been revived in the past few years. It’s helping decongest cities, creating new land for development, mass housing and easing the pressure of cramped metropolises.
Manila bay Reclamation
It is spread across 5503 hectares (13,598 acres). It involves 14 approved projects covering the landscape and several [planned ongoing reclamation initiatives along the Manila Bay coastline adjacent to Roxas Boulevard. Components include the 148-hectare Manila Solar City Project (a mixed-use development), the 419-hectare Horizon Manila, and the 318-hectare Manila Waterfront City. The estimated investment is nearly 23 trillion pesos ($397 billion).
Bulacan Aerotropolis
It is developed by San Miguel Corp (SMC) aimed at the construction of the New Manila Airport which is also known as Bulacan International Airport. The project land spread across 25oo hectares (25km2) while the airport covers 1168 hectares and part of the adjoining airport city which is a part of the under-construction behemoth valued at $15 billion. The material used in the project is 6 million tons of slip, solid waste and trash from the rivers of Manila and nearby provinces. It’s a major part of the overall effort to boost economic growth.
Cebu South Coastal Urban Development Project (CSCUD)
The CSCUD focuses on commercial, residential and industrial areas to increase economic activities in Cebu. The South Road Properties (SRP) is spread around 300 hectares (740 acres) reclamation area in Cebu city of Philippines. Aimed at transforming the southern coastal areas of the city into modern urban hubs their primary objective is to promote sustainable growth and uplift the lifestyle of the residents.
The project aims to provide 40 buildings for socialized housing and will take place in three phases. Additional facilities like schools, health care centers, and supermarkets will create an integrated community.
Cebu City North Reclamation Area (NRA)
Situated along the northern coastline it started in 1962. Beginning with 169 hectares, the NRA has further expanded to 330 hectares. Due to its location it provides easy access to key transportation hubs like Mactan-Cebu International Airport and Cebu International Port which makes it a prime area for business, commerce and tourism.
Being the economic driver the NRA houses commercial establishments, shopping malls, hotels, business parks that host many multinational corporations and local businesses. These establishments not only contribute to the economy but also provide jobs and attract investments.
Navotas Coastal Development
In order to support the local economy and improve living standards, this development plans to develop urban, commercial, industrial housing with green spaces. The entire project takes over an extensive area of 650 hectares. A significant area will be dedicated to housing to provide affordable and sustainable living spaces. While large parts of land will also be used for commercial and industrial purposes. The development also includes recreational areas, and waterfront promenades, enhancing the livability and aesthetic appeal of the area.
Pasay Reclamation Project
Covering approximately 265 hectares, this project aims at economic development, providing housing and job opportunities through creation of new residential, commercial and industrial zones.
Panglao Island Reclamation
Part of the Bohol province in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines, Panglao is known for its tourism with beautiful beaches and dive sites. The island covers an area of 450 hectares and will be used for various purposes including tourism, residential, commercial, and industrial development.
The Reclamation project offers significant economic and social benefits but comes with many drawbacks too. Besides engineering challenges there are many environmental concerns as well. The local communities have opposed these projects and have mentioned negative impacts on the environment. These concerns, and others, must be carefully considered to ensure sustainable practices in order to mitigate the downsides.
