In Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Casey, and Monash stand out, while in Brisbane, the Brisbane local government area, Logan, and Moreton Bay present the most potential. The study reveals approximately 242,000 suitable properties in Sydney, 230,000 in Melbourne, and another 185,000 in Brisbane.

The United States is preparing to introduce more stringent measures aimed at restricting China’s access to advanced semiconductors and chipmaking equipment in an effort to prevent the acquisition of cutting-edge technologies that could provide a military advantage to its geopolitical rival.

The latest rules are designed to enhance and close the loopholes in restrictions that were initially implemented in October of the previous year. The Biden administration is aiming to bolster controls on the sale of graphics chips for artificial intelligence applications and advanced chipmaking equipment to Chinese companies.

Additionally, the United States will implement more rigorous checks on Chinese firms attempting to evade export restrictions by routing shipments through other countries. Chinese chip design firms will also be added to a trade restriction list, which mandates that overseas manufacturers must obtain a U.S. license to fulfil orders from these firms.

These updated restrictions will be officially published in the coming week. Following this news report, chip-related stocks saw a decline in Asia. Notably, Tokyo Electron Ltd., Advantest Corp., and Disco Corp. in Japan all saw drops of at least 4% and South Korean stocks like Hana Micron Inc. also experienced declines.

The initial export controls faced criticism, particularly for not garnering support from key allies, including the Netherlands and Japan, before their implementation. These controls inadvertently allowed chip equipment companies in those countries to continue selling advanced equipment to Chinese customers, enabling China to progress in developing its domestic capabilities.

Huawei Technologies Co., a major Chinese telecommunications company, introduced a new smartphone in August powered by an advanced 7-nanometer processor. This development showcased China’s manufacturing capabilities, which surpassed the point where the U.S. initially sought to halt its progress.

The achievement by Huawei cast doubt on Washington’s ability to impede Beijing’s technological ambitions and has increased political pressure on the Biden administration to impose more sanctions on Huawei and its chipmaking partner, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. However, the Biden administration is working to address several outstanding issues with stricter rules, particularly related to the development of AI and the transfer of technologies through other countries.

The new controls regarding graphics chips include components known as accelerators, which are utilized in data centres for training AI software. The Biden administration is making adjustments to the parameters governing the export of these chips to China, following Nvidia’s development of a China-specific model to bypass last year’s restrictions.

Furthermore, the rules will restrict the shipment of certain chips to overseas subsidiaries and affiliates of Chinese companies. Companies will now require a license to export prohibited technologies to intermediary countries.

At the same time, the United States has listened to the calls from companies for fewer blanket restrictions, as industry leaders argue they need to continue selling to the world’s largest chip market. Under the updated rules, companies can export to China nearly all consumer graphics chips, with the exception of the most powerful chips typically used in gaming PCs. A select few consumer chips at the cutting edge will require notification to the U.S. government before export.

The revised rules will not include restrictions on Chinese companies’ access to allied cloud computing services or U.S. The administration will release a request for comments to better understand potential national security risks associated with this access and explore options to address these concerns.

The United States has also extended waivers for South Korean firms Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., along with Taiwanese chip giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., to continue shipping some restricted chipmaking technology to their facilities in China.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) issued a warning on Tuesday, stating that the global economic recovery is losing momentum. This warning comes as a new conflict in the Middle East threatens to disrupt the world economy, which has already been grappling with multiple crises over the past few years.

The eruption of hostilities between Israel and Hamas, which began over the weekend, presents a significant challenge in safeguarding economies from increasingly frequent and unpredictable global shocks. The ongoing conflict has cast a shadow over the annual meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Morocco, where top economic policymakers had initially intended to address the persistent economic impacts of the pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank, expressed concern over the delicate state of economies in this situation. He noted that the outbreak of war complicates the efforts of central banks to navigate a path toward a “soft landing,” particularly as they attempt to manage inflation without triggering a recession.

Banga acknowledged that, at present, the impact of the Middle East conflict on the global economy is less severe than the war in Ukraine. However, he emphasized the potential dangers if the conflict were to escalate, describing it as “a crisis of unimaginable proportion.”

Many of these nations face the specter of mounting debt, which now accounts for 60 per cent of the region’s total output, double what it was a decade ago. Soaring interest rates have contributed to the increasing cost of debt repayment.

The current global landscape is characterized by a reappraisal of global supply chains and growing geopolitical rivalries. In addition to these complexities, estimates indicate that trillions of dollars in new financing will be required in the next decade to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change in developing countries.

In response to the surprise attack by Hamas militants on Saturday and the subsequent declaration of war by the Israeli government, Israel’s central bank, the Bank of Israel, has unveiled a significant intervention plan aimed at shoring up the country’s currency, the shekel.

The central bank’s statement on Monday outlined a comprehensive program that includes selling as much as $30 billion in foreign exchange and extending up to $15 billion through swap mechanisms. The primary objective of this intervention is to mitigate the volatility in the exchange rate of the shekel and ensure essential liquidity in the financial markets.

This move represents a dramatic shift in policy for the Bank of Israel, which had previously been concerned about the shekel’s excessive appreciation. It marks the first time the central bank has engaged in selling foreign exchange to support the shekel since it was allowed to float freely.

The decision comes on the heels of the deadliest attack on Israel in decades, which resulted in hundreds of casualties. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that the conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip is expected to be protracted and challenging.

The shekel had been under pressure for months due to investor concerns surrounding the government’s controversial efforts to curtail the judiciary’s authority. Among a basket of 31 major currencies tracked by Bloomberg, the shekel ranks as one of the year’s worst performers.

As the conflict continues for a third day, Deutsche Bank AG suggests that Israel’s central bank is likely to increase interest rates further and could reintroduce bond purchases to provide support to the shekel and financial markets.

Deutsche Bank strategists led by Christian Wietoska noted that although geopolitical tensions had previously had minimal effects on the currency, this time, “pressure on the shekel seems unavoidable.”

The Bank of Israel’s currency interventions, over a decade ago, aimed at curbing the surging shekel, have led to substantial reserves, surpassing a third of the country’s GDP. As of August’s end, these reserves stood at nearly $203 billion.

This recent intervention is the first by the central bank in approximately two years. US President Joe Biden has pledged unwavering US support for Israel.

Paul McNamara, a fund manager at GAM UK, expects a minimal impact on rates and a gradual shekel movement, citing the scale of reserves and US support. The conflict has also rattled bond investors, with the price of Israel’s 100-year debt maturing in 2120 falling to its lowest level since its issuance in 2020. Additionally, the cost of insuring the nation’s debt against default surged to its highest level since 2009, with a 25-basis point increase to 84.

The bank founded in 2010 by American billionaire Vernon Hill, represents the first new High Street bank to emerge in the UK in over 150 years. It currently serves 2.7 million customers across 76 branches, primarily located in the south of England, and holds approximately £15.5 billion in UK customer deposits.

In a bid to bolster its financial position, Metro Bank, one of the UK’s high street lenders, has recently finalized a rescue package worth £325 million following intensive negotiations over the weekend. The bank had been under scrutiny due to concerns over its balance sheet.

The rescue deal includes a capital raise of £325 million, consisting of £150 million in fresh equity investments from shareholders and £600 million in debt refinancing. Leading this equity raise is Metro Bank’s largest shareholder, Colombian billionaire Jaime Gilinski Bacal’s Spaldy Investments, which is contributing £102 million. As a result, Bacal’s ownership stake in the bank will soar from 9% to a controlling 53%.

Metro Bank is also exploring the potential sale of up to £3 billion in residential mortgages. The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), the regulatory arm of the Bank of England, had reportedly approached several major banks, including NatWest and JP Morgan Chase, to gauge their interest in acquiring Metro Bank.

A spokesperson for the PRA welcomed Metro Bank’s efforts to strengthen its capital position, signaling approval of the bank’s moves to stabilize its financial standing.

Daniel Frumkin, Metro Bank’s CEO, expressed optimism about the future, stating, “Today’s announcement marks a new chapter for Metro Bank, facilitating the delivery of continued profitable growth over the coming years.”

Bacal emphasized his belief in the importance of physical and digital banking underscored by exceptional customer service, expressing confidence that the announced package will empower the bank to pursue growth.

JP Morgan Chase, after examining the possibility of acquiring Metro Bank in its entirety, ultimately decided against such a move. NatWest was also approached regarding the purchase of the entire business and is contemplating taking on Metro’s mortgage portfolio.

HSBC, Lloyds, and Santander UK were among the other institutions contacted as potential buyers for Metro Bank. EY, a consultancy firm, was engaged by the PRA to explore potential purchasers, with a focus on selling the entire business rather than its individual components.

Notably, digital-only rival Shawbrook Bank recently made an approach to Metro Bank in the weeks leading up to these developments.

The rescue plan comes on the heels of a challenging week for Metro Bank. Its shares tumbled by 25% shortly after the bank disclosed its consideration of raising hundreds of millions of pounds from investors. Nevertheless, the shares rebounded by 21% to reach 45.25p following reports of a £600 million capital injection offer from bondholders.

Faster. Together.’

Al Mazrouei emphasized the UAE’s commitment to clean energy, stating, “Having one of the fastest-growing clean energy industries in the world, the UAE is set to generate a total capacity of 19.8 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030. In addition, the UAE seeks to become a leading producer and supplier of low-carbon hydrogen, working towards producing 1.4 million metric tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per annum by 2031 and 15 million metric tonnes per annum by 2050.”

The high-level panel at ADIPEC explored innovative policies and inclusive practices as key elements in meeting rising energy demands while striving for net-zero emissions. Addressing the need for practicality and unity, Al Mazrouei called for a focus on technical collaboration within organizations like OPEC, stating, “We need to keep the politics aside, and as OPEC, work as a technical group.” Haitham Al Ghais, Secretary-General of OPEC, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of having a clear roadmap for achieving sustainable energy goals.

Ministers from Türkiye and Romania shared insights into initiatives in their respective countries aimed at facilitating the transition to a cleaner energy system.

ADIPEC 2023 is set to feature ten conferences, including a new hydrogen-focused conference and an expanded strategic decarbonization conference. These conferences will address critical themes such as energy security, finance and investment mobilization, and the development of a zero-carbon value chain.

With over 2,200 participating companies, 30 country pavilions, and 160,000 attendees from 160 countries, ADIPIEC 2023 serves as a global platform for shaping the future of the energy industry. The event includes contributions from more than 40 ministers and 120 global C-suite executives, who will participate in over 350 conference sessions covering essential energy transition priorities. These priorities include addressing methane and carbon emissions, increasing investment in technology and renewables, decarbonizing heavy industries, and nurturing the leaders of tomorrow.

With India maintaining a military presence in the Maldives and supporting significant infrastructure projects, President Solih was perceived as pro-India. However, Muizzu, a candidate who advocates for closer ties with China, has signaled potential shifts in foreign policy that could have far-reaching implications in the Indian Ocean region.

One of the primary issues at the forefront of this election was the presence of Indian military personnel in the Maldives. The Maldives currently hosts 75 Indian military personnel, with New Delhi justifying this presence as necessary for the operation of helicopters and an aircraft donated to the country. Muizzu’s campaign, however, centered on the promise to withdraw these troops from the Maldives.
